Kirsty & Gareth's recommendation:
Our favourite. At the foot of Cader Idris, Castell y Bere was Built by Welsh ruler Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (Llywelyn the Great) construction began in 1221.
The sophisticated entrance featuring two gatehouses with drawbridges was extremely advanced for its time.

Cistercian monks were more than religious men. Worldly Cistercians were also pioneering sheep farmers and some of the first rural entrepreneurs. Their network of abbeys included Cymer, idyllically set at the mouth of the Mawddach Estuary.

Harlech Castle
Kirsty & Gareth's recommendation:
None of Edward I’s mighty coastal fortresses has a more spectacular setting
Harlech Castle crowns a sheer rocky crag overlooking the dunes far below – waiting in vain for the tide to turn and the distant sea to lap at its feet once again.

Aberlefenni Slate Mine Walk
Kirsty & Gareth's recommendation:
See URL above for downloadable PDF of walking route. Fantastic walk to view Aberlefenni Slate mine. Please don't venture off the route as a lot of the land is privately owned and the mine in very unsafe and prone to collapse. You will be able to see Alma, the slate cavern up on the hill from the path described
